There are two classes of chain used in ships: Stud Chains, and Studless Chains. With stud it is referred the central rod located in every studlink chain, which simplifies operations and prevents problems with the chain gypsy. The studless chain used in ships has shorter links, and is usually meant for smaller vessels, and is commonly known as a yatch chain.
